Joeboy Biography

Joeboy was born Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa-Donus on the 21st of May 1997 in Lagos State, Nigeria. Growing up in a musical family he developed a love for music from a tender age. His exposure to different genres of music during his formative years influenced his music career.

Music Career

Joeboy’s journey into the music industry started in 2017 when he recorded a cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You”. This cover went viral and marked a shift from rapping to singing, a move inspired by a friend. The success of the cover caught the attention of Nigerian artist and entrepreneur Mr Eazi who found Joeboy on Instagram and invited him to be a part of the emPawa Africa initiative-a program designed to support emerging African artists by giving them resources to grow their career.

In October 2018 Joeboy released “Fààjí” featuring Mr Eazi. He used his emPawa100 grant to shoot a video for the song. The following year he released the hit single “Baby” which he wrote and recorded in 45 minutes after receiving a beat from producer BeatsbyKO. The song was released in March 2019 and the visualizer played a big role in its success, it gained over 20 million streams on YouTube and Spotify in 2019. The visualizer alone got 31 million views on YouTube.

After the success of “Baby” Joeboy released “Beginning” in August 2019 another song that resonated with the audience and got a lot of views on YouTube. In November 2019 he dropped his debut EP “Love & Light” which featured singles like “Baby” and “Beginning” and collaborations like “Don’t Call Me” featuring Mayorkun.Joeboy kept the momentum going with the release of “Call” in April 2020 a single off his debut album.

In February 2021 he released the album “Somewhere Between Beauty & Magic” which did moderate commercial numbers. He released his sophomore album “Body & Soul” in May 2023 preceded by singles like “Sip (Alcohol)”, “Contour”, “Body & Soul” and “Duffel Bag”.

Awards and Nominations

Throughout his career Joeboy has bagged several awards. He won Best Artiste in African Pop at the 2019 All Africa Music Awards and Best Pop at the 2020 Soundcity MVP Awards Festival. He has also been nominated for several awards at The Headies and City People Entertainment Awards.
