Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has turned down rumors suggesting that he is planning to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking with journalists on Tuesday at the venue of the recently concluded National Conference in Abuja, El-Rufai clarified his position, stating that he has no intention of departing from the ruling party.
“I am not leaving the APC. I don’t have such plans,” El-Rufai affirmed when pressed by reporters.
He further explained that his recent criticisms of the party were driven by a desire for internal reform. “No, no, no, I want them to change,” he added, underlining his commitment to influencing positive change within the APC.
El-Rufai’s comments came after reports surfaced on Monday in which he expressed dissatisfaction with the APC’s leadership.
The former Kaduna governor accused the party of abandoning its founding principles and failing to promote internal democracy.
He lamented the alleged stagnation within the APC, revealing that no party organs, such as the National Executive Committee (NEC) or caucuses, had met in the past two years.
“I no longer recognise the APC,” El-Rufai stated, criticizing the party’s lack of structure and the apparent absence of leadership.
His comments were made during a broader conversation about the future of Nigeria’s political landscape, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.
El-Rufai’s remarks on the APC echoed broader concerns about Nigeria’s political system, which were discussed at the National Conference.
During the event, a coalition of civil society organizations, including the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development (Centre LSD) and the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), convened to discuss the state of democracy in Nigeria.
