Yemi Alade fully known as Yemi Eberechi Alade, born March 13, 1989 in Abia State, Nigeria, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, actress and activist.

Personal Life

She comes from a polyglot family; her father James Alade was a police commissioner from Ondo State and her mother Helen Uzoma is from Igbo background from Abia State.

Yemi Alade grew up in Lagos as the 5th of 7 children, Yemi was exposed to different cultures which later influenced her eclectic music style.

Yemi’s educational journey started at St. Saviour British Primary School and Victory Grammar School in Lagos. She furthered her studies at UNILAG also known as the University of Lagos and she graduated with a degree in Geography. During her university days, Yemi had a clear passion for music which made her to start participating in talent shows and competitions.

Music Career

Yemi Alade’s rise to stardom began in 2009 when she won the Peak Talent Show, a big deal that marked the beginning of her professional music career. After this win, she signed with Effyzzie Music Group and released her debut single Fimisile. However, it was her 2013 single Johnny that brought her international recognition. The song got massive airplay across Africa and beyond and was one of the most viewed African songs on YouTube at the time.

Philanthropy

Apart from Yemi Alade musical achievements, she is known by many to be a very dedicated activist and philanthropist. On September 23, 2020 she was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In this role she focuses on raising awareness about gender equality, women empowerment and climate change. Yemi participates in campaigns and initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable development and uplifting marginalized communities.
