Akpabio, speaking at an International Women’s Day event, dismissed the accusations against him, referring to them as “useless allegations” while claiming they were motivated by her recent change of seat in the Senate.
Akpabio also asserted that the allegations were false and accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of traumatizing not just him, but others in the Senate as well.
Akpabio’s remarks come after the Senate imposed a six-month suspension on Akpoti-Uduaghan following what the Senate President described as a series of baseless claims.
According to Akpabio, the issue began when Akpoti-Uduaghan’s seat was altered and her committee assignments were shifted, a move that he claims is routine in the Senate.
He stated that it was at this point that she started making serious allegations, including accusations of s£xual harassment, claims which Akpabio vehemently denies.
“I realized that the allegations came only after her seat and committee were changed,” Akpabio said.
He added that prior to these changes, there were no complaints from Akpoti-Uduaghan, not even to her husband or anyone else in the Senate.
He also drew attention to the timing of the accusations, noting that they began just a day before his birthday, on December 8, 2023, after the seat and committee reshuffling took place.
Akpabio maintains that until then, there had been no mention of harassment or any other such issue.
Despite facing criticism following Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension, Akpabio continues to maintain his innocence.
He questioned the veracity of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s previous accusations, pointing out that none of them had been substantiated in the past.
“None has been proven so far,” he remarked, adding that these ongoing allegations were damaging to both the individuals involved and the reputation of the Senate as a whole.
