South Korean impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol is set to be released from prison.

The court in South Korea has decided to release Impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol from prison after he was arrested in connection with his brief martial law declaration in December. he led an abortive c0up on Dec. 3rd, 2024.

Yoon Suk sought his release after his arrest in late January, making him the first sitting president in the country to be taken into custody. He was later indicted on charges of insurrection over his martial law in early December.

South Korea’s martial law decision created a leadership vacuum at a time when the country faces growing thr3ats from North Korea and tariffs under President Donald Trump.

Yoon’s lawyers have said his arrest was !llegal and invalid as the warrant was issued by the wrong jurisdiction and prosecutors indicted the president past the expiration date of his arrest. Prosecutors rejected these claims and said they followed due procedures.

The decision comes as the Constitutional Court separately mulls whether to remove Yoon from office permanently in his impeachment trial. The court held its final hearing in February. 25th, 2025 and is expected to decide within weeks if not days.

Koreans have started a protest against the court’s ruling to release the impeached Yoon Suk Yeol. They argued that he led an abortive coup through the !llegal declaration of martial law and there should be no privilege and special treatment for the cr!minal ringleader of insurrection.
