PDP condemns Senator Natasha’s suspension, accuses Akpabio of cover-up

The suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Nigerian Senate has ignited political debate, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) condemning the decision and accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of attempting a cover-up.

The six-month suspension was imposed on Thursday by the Senate for allegedly violating the chamber’s rules, following her accusations of s£xual harassment against Akpabio.

In a statement released on Friday, the PDP strongly criticized the Senate’s action, pointing out that the suspension was in retaliation for Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims of s£xual harassment by the Senate President.

Akpabio has denied the allegations, but the PDP argues that the handling of the case by the Senate leadership raises serious concerns about transparency and justice.

The party claims that suspending Akpoti-Uduaghan without thoroughly investigating the accusations not only undermines the credibility of the Senate but also suggests a deliberate attempt to silence dissent.

The PDP’s statement, signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, goes further to argue that the suspension is a violation of the democratic rights of the people of Kogi Central Senatorial Zone, who are now left without representation in the Senate.

The party insists that if Akpabio had nothing to hide, he should have voluntarily stepped aside to allow an unbiased investigation into the allegations.

Instead, the party believes that his actions have contributed to the perception that the Senate under his leadership is focused more on protecting its own interests than ensuring justice.

Adding to the controversy, the PDP also drew attention to ongoing investigations into Akpabio’s tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State and as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.

The Senate President is reportedly under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged financial misconduct, including the misappropriation of funds during his time in office.

These controversies, the PDP claims, further tarnish the image of the National Assembly and shows the need for accountability and reform.

The PDP has called on the Senate to reinstate Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan immediately and to launch a full, open investigation into the s£xual harassment allegations.

The party’s statement concludes with a plea for the Senate to restore its integrity by upholding democratic values and ensuring that all members are treated fairly and justly.
