CAN President joins muslims at Ramadan Iftar in Abuja, advocates religious unity

President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Most Rev. Daniel Okoh, joined Muslims in Abuja for an iftar (breaking of fast) on Thursday.

The event, held at the Al-Habibiyya Mosque, was a testament to the power of religious unity in Nigeria, as it brought together over 2,300 fasting Muslims who were provided with meals during the holy month of Ramadan.

During his participation in the event, Okoh emphasized the importance of fostering religious tolerance and cooperation between Nigeria’s diverse religious communities.

Speaking to the gathering, he remarked, “We, Muslims and Christians, are essentially the same, and we must work together for the progress of this country.” 

His presence at the mosque, which some may have viewed as unusual, sent a strong message of unity and peace. Addressing those who questioned his participation, Okoh assured, “I have come here today, and I will come again.

This is a moment for learning and sharing. I encourage every Nigerian to embrace understanding and mutual respect across religious lines.”

The event at Al-Habibiyya Mosque was more than just a religious gathering; it highlighted the shared values of compassion, care for the less privileged, and unity in diversity.

The National Chief Imam of Al-Habibiyya Mosque, Sheikh Fuad Adeyemi, explained that the mosque’s annual Ramadan feeding program is designed to assist the less fortunate, irrespective of their faith. 

“We must recognize our shared humanity and the fact that we live together in the same society,” he said, emphasizing the need for mutual support to make a positive difference in the community.

The Iftar gathering not only brought together Muslims but also included Christian clerics, CAN representatives, faith-based organizations, and traditional rulers, all united by a common message, the importance of peaceful coexistence.
