November 2, 2024, saw Kemi Badenoch enter political history when she was elected the leader of the UK Conservative Party, making her the first Black woman to lead a significant political party in the United Kingdom. Her election happened at a time when the Conservatives needed a comeback after suffering a massive loss in the House of Commons by over 200 seats only a couple of months earlier.

In this respect, Badenoch’s rise to the leadership position also marks a shift in the British political demography and the Conservative party in particular, especially when it is contending with a complex political environment.

Badenoch’s win in the contest was clear, much to the delight of the voters. She won the contest by polling 53,806 votes out of party members, while her opponent, Robert Jenrick, attracted 41,388 votes. This election was particularly significant due to its high stakes, as it came after the worst performance by the Conservatives, in which the party managed to win only 121 parliamentary seats.

During her speech, Kemi Badenoch continued with the message of change within the party, saying that

‘‘The job that awaits us is challenging but straightforward”

While delivering her speech, she recognized the importance of making contact with the voters that have tuned out from Conservatives, stating that;

“Our party is needed for the service of the country’s successes but to be heard, we have to be honest about what is planted within the very core of us—the essence that makes each person unique.”

Responses to victory of Kemi Badenoch

Since the election of Badenoch, the responses have been given a mixed bag. There are many people within the Conservative Party who have come out in support of her leadership; they have also highlighted some difficulties that she has.

Labour Party’s Ellie Reeves commented that Kemi Badenoch was involved in the “cacophony of the past 14 years,” which suggests that she lacks the credibility needed to manage the party. Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey welcomed her success, noting the impact of history, but also warned the parties’ voters regarded the Conservatives as “too divided, out-of-touch, and unwilling to accept Conservative calamities in the last years.”

Nevertheless, Kemi Badenoch deserves congratulations, and she has received them from different political leaders, such as Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister, who said that her victory is the source of great pride for the country.

The remarks from the opposition affirm this achievement as a groundbreaking, emphatic introduction of a woman of color into British politics.

Stating about Kemi Badenoch, one can note that she has rather eclectic background and extensive experience in the sphere. She was raised in London to Nigerian parents, though she lived briefly in Nigeria before she relocated back into the country.

Badenoch, before joining politics, had been a banker and a computer professional—the two experiences that define her angle on economic matters. She was first an MP in 2017 and has been in government roles where she served in the capacity of the business secretary under Rishi Sunak.

To the grassroots, she has been perceived as more than ready to be a leader of the party given what she has been doing in her rise up the ranks. In her campaign, Badenoch set herself in using the slogan of getting back to ‘first principles,’ which can be said to have appealed to a lot of its party members who had grown impatient for the party to chart a new course.

As Kemi Badenoch prepares to lead the Conservative Party, all eyes will be on her first major test: the budget vote and her appearance at the Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQ) against Keir Starmer.

These occasions will help her to define her political program, including the organizational platform of the party, as well as show her aptitude for leadership in conditions of intense competition.
