K1 De Ultimate is from the Yoruba ethnic group and born in Agarawu, Lagos Island, Nigeria, though his family roots is from Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State.

From a young age Wasiu showed interest in music especially the traditional Yoruba music. He was influenced by Fuji music legend Sikiru Ayinde Barrister who later became his mentor.
