Fact Check: Did Youths Burn Down Wike’s House?

Reports have been making rounds on social media claiming that the residence of former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, was set ablaze by angry youths protesting against him. The news, widely circulated by PDP News Page on Facebook, alleged that protesters also torched several vehicles on the property while voicing their displeasure over recent political tensions in the state.

The viral reports suggested that the enraged youths chanted anti-Wike slogans, vowing to prevent his return to Rivers State. Eyewitness accounts quoted in the reports also claimed that security forces had been deployed to control the situation, though tensions remained high with more protesters gathering across the state.

However, an investigation conducted by PM News has debunked these claims, revealing that the reports of arson are entirely false.

Speaking on the matter, the Rivers State Police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, categorically dismissed the rumors, stating that the alleged attack on Wike’s residence is “fake news” and does not reflect the reality on the ground.

While the claims of Wike’s house being burned down have been proven false, sources suggest that political unrest in Rivers State remains a serious concern. Investigations indicate that there are indeed plots by aggrieved individuals to attack properties linked to Wike.

A political insider confirmed to PM News that there is growing agitation against Wike, with certain groups prepared to target his assets in the state.

“The story about burning his house is untrue, but I won’t deny that there are plans to target his properties. We are waiting for instructions. If our leader says we should act, we will,” the source stated.

Another political figure, speaking anonymously, reinforced the claim, adding: “There’s already tension. Some people are eager to act, but we have been asked to hold back. If given the go-ahead, Wike’s properties will be targeted.”

Wike’s Response

These threats come on the heels of Wike’s latest remarks about his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Speaking at an event organized by the Ijaw stakeholders of Kalabari Kingdom under the NEW Associates platform, Wike took a strong stance against Fubara, warning him to brace for more political battles.

“You’re already down, 2-0. But more are still coming,” Wike declared, hinting at ongoing power struggles within the state government.

While the reports of Wike’s house being set on fire have been confirmed as false, the political crisis in Rivers State appears far from over. With rising tensions and threats of violence looming, the situation remains one to watch closely.
