Born on February 5th 1985 in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro came from humble beginnings to become a football superstar. As the youngest of four siblings, he was raised by his mum, Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro, a cook and cleaner, and his dad, José Diniz Aveiro, a municipal gardener. Despite the financial struggles, Ronaldo had a passion for football from a young age. He joined a local team, Andorinha, where his dad was the kit man, so he could be surrounded by the game.

At 12, Ronaldo’s talent was spotted by Sporting CP, one of Portugal’s top teams. He moved to Lisbon to join their youth academy, the start of his professional career. He overcame homesickness and adapted to a new environment and debuted for Sporting’s first team at 17.
In 2003, during a pre-season friendly between Sporting CP and Manchester United, Ronaldo impressed United’s manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Internationally, Ronaldo’s record is unparalleled. He debuted in 2003 and has over 200 caps, the most capped male player in history. He’s the all-time top male scorer with 135 goals.
