BREAKING: Governor Grants Prerogative of Mercy TO 53 Convicts
The Osun State Governor, H.E, Senator Ademola Nurudeen Adeleke. has recently decided to free 53 convicted persons.
The pardoned individuals were in prison for various cr!mes among which are terrible cr!mes that have left deep marks to the victims and their families. The governor however, defended the move by stating that it formed part of a reform agenda aimed at assimilation of ex-convicts into society.
To this effect, learning from a statement, Governor Adeleke granted clemency over 53 convicts charged with different convictions within the Nigerian Correctional Centre. The act, the statement added, is in compliance with the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
Nevertheless, the decision has not received such approval among people. People have opined their dissatisfaction through various platforms most of their main worry being on the presidential pardons where individuals who have been incarcerated after being convicted of various cr!min*l activities such as, v!olence and th3ft were granted amnesty. Such people’s critics argue that letting them out of incarceration could be dangerous to other members of society.
Since the announcement was made there have been lot of reactions on the social media platforms as people who feel that the pardons should not have been granted express their disgust. Others have questioned whether the cases be reviewed saying that the governor has hampered the administration of justice.
It is also anticipated that in the next few days, forums will be organized so that those concerned can deliberate on the potential impacts of this decision in addition to those developing ways of addressing issues of concern for both victims and those with the desire to start afresh after serving their prison terms.
On the other hand, the governor’s office sticks to its ground pointing that the “the actual meaning of justice is the one that encompasses punishment, as well as forgiveness and, indeed, potential for transformation.”
As to how this is going to emerge remains to be seen for, while people contemplate their reactions toward the pardons, the governor’s decision is sure to leave its imprint on discussions of justice and rehabilitation in the forthcoming months.
