In a chilling act of v!olence, the convoy of Honorable Ginger Onwusibe, a prominent member of the House of Representatives representing Nsiala-Ngwa North/South constituency, came under attack on the evening of November 17, 2024. At approximately 8:30 PM Sunday, two police officers from the Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 4 in Makurdi, Inspector Dunna Jatau and Inspector Bala Mohammed, were ambushed by armed assailants while performing their official duties. The officers were traveling in a police Toyota Hilux vehicle after escorting Hon. Ginger Onwusibe to his destination in Umuahia.

As they approached the Umuahia South Local Government Area Secretariat in Ubakala, a Toyota Corolla with tinted windows, manned by gunmen in black attire, intercepted their vehicle. In a brutal and calculated assault, the assailants opened fire, leading to the untimely death of Insp. Bala Mohammed, who succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. Insp. Dunna Jatau and the vehicle driver narrowly escaped, their survival offering a glimmer of hope for justice.

Following the attack, the Abia State Police Command swiftly mobilized its tactical teams, launching a comprehensive search operation in the area. Officers combed the vicinity in pursuit of the assailants, demonstrating a determined commitment to apprehending those responsible.

ASP Maureen C. Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the tragic event in a statement. She assured the public of the command’s dedication to uncovering the perpetrators and bringing them to justice.
