Rivers State to hold fresh local Government elections following supreme court verdicts

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, revealed that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) will conduct fresh elections for local government councils.

This follows recent Supreme Court judgments that have deepened the state’s ongoing political crisis.

Governor Fubara, addressing the state in a broadcast, emphasized that despite his administration’s disagreements with the court rulings, it remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the state’s governance is in accordance with legal principles. 

The Supreme Court judgments have placed a spotlight on Rivers State’s political matter, with a lot of people eagerly awaiting the government’s response.

Governor Fubara assured the residents of the state that his administration will comply with the rulings once the certified true copies of the judgments are received, expected by Friday, March 7, 2025.

This will allow the government to properly study and implement the decisions as mandated by the court.

In the meantime, Governor Fubara took immediate steps to address the governance vacuum left by the current political uncertainty.

As an interim measure, he has ordered the Heads of Local Government Administration (HOLGAs) to take over the administration of the 23 local government areas (LGAs) across the state.

This action comes after the Supreme Court’s ruling outlawed the use of caretaker committees in local government administration.

The outgoing local government chairmen have been instructed to hand over power by Monday, March 3, 2025, to ensure a smooth transition.
