“Yoruba Ronu: A Slur or a Badge of Honour?” – Daniel Regha Fires Up Debate
Celebrity commentator Daniel Regha has done it again. He posted on X (formerly Twitter) and the whole place is on fire. He lambasted the misuse of the phrase “Yoruba Ronu” saying it has become a slur used to shame the Yoruba people as a whole.
He wrote, “Yoruba Ronu has become a derogatory phrase, which many of u are quick to use to spite the Yorubas (as a whole) for no reason. Same y’all will be up in arms if ur regions are stigmatized or painted negatively… U are an incredibly stup’d person if u can’t make ur statement without disrespecting any tribe, state or region.”
Regha’s post was bashed for tribalism by some people. It called for a more civil conversation among Nigerians and went viral while getting a lot of reactions from fans and haters. Some agreed with him while others disagreed with his interpretation of the phrase.

@ogundeleogd was fed up, and said, “I taya oh. Anytime you say anything good about the country not necessarily about any political office holder, you’re tagged ‘Yoruba Ronu’. This is how the phrase has been misused in politics and social media.”
On the other hand, @Mnneji1 clarified, “Point of correction, it’s not for all the Yoruba as a people. It’s for the APC touts and supporters who can’t reason like human beings.” This shows the political undertone of the phrase as some see it as a criticism of a particular political ideology and not the Yoruba ethnic group.
But not everyone agreed… @sammirano said, “Da fuck I will laugh if you call me Roun or Yoruba Ronu, it gives me some diabolical joy 😊. Ibo animals have nothing on us, the conservative movement is not stopping for any foolish people.“
@Toyin982 added, “It’s only derogatory if you think it is… I am Yoruba Ronu, Yoruba first, Yoruba conservative. If you don’t like it, too damn bad.”
Meanwhile, some remained neutral… @Mazimum_ said, “The hypocrisy is too much! We condemn tribalism in politics but perpetuate it in our everyday conversations. Let’s call out this double standard and promote respect for all cultures and regions. Intellectualism without empathy is just ignorance in disguise.”
