“Why I Chose Integrity Over a Life-Changing Opportunity” – Tunde Onakoya
Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya recently shared a choice that could have changed his life. He posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he turned down a big offer because it went against his values and future plans.

Onakoya, the founder of Chess in Slums Africa, said integrity over money. He admitted it was tough but felt free and empowered after the decision.
In his post he also thanked @OgaBoxx for the guidance during this period and said having a support system when making tough decisions is key.
Tunde Onakoya’s story from a tough childhood to being a hope for many is inspiring and instructive. At 10 he had to stop formal education, a setback that made him discover chess which went on to be a game that would become his lifeline and passion. This new found interest was an escape and a platform to redefine his future.
Recognizing the power of chess, Onakoya founded Chess in Slums Africa to empower children in low income communities. His initiative has given over 200 children access to education and mentoring, using chess as a tool to teach critical thinking, strategy and resilience.
Onakoya’s commitment to social impact has gone global. Ex-Manchester United footballer Patrice Evra visited the Chess in Slums project in Oshodi, Lagos.
Beyond chess, Onakoya is making a difference in other ways. Recently he gave scholarships to 5 children of a physically challenged man who could no longer afford their education so they can complete their university education.
His story shows how personal experiences can drive broader social change. By staying true to himself and leveraging his passion, Onakoya has turned his challenges into opportunities for others, proving that integrity and purpose can lead to big impact.
