Tinubu gives former INEC chairman Jega new appointment 

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Attahiru Jega, the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as the Presidential Adviser and Coordinator of Presidential Livestock Reforms.

This development, confirmed by Tinubu’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga, on his verified X account, marks a new chapter in Jega’s distinguished career.

Jega, who served as INEC chairman from 2010 to 2015, is recognized for his role in overseeing the 2011 and 2015 general elections, both of which were important in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

His appointment to the newly created position signifies the administration’s commitment to addressing the complex issues surrounding livestock and farming in Nigeria, particularly the ongoing farmers-herders conflict that has plagued the country for decades.

In July 2024, President Tinubu took a decisive step toward tackling this longstanding issue by establishing the Ministry of Livestock Development.

The ministry was created to find sustainable solutions to the persistent clashes between farmers and nomadic cattle herders, a conflict that has resulted in significant loss of lives and property.

The creation of the ministry was part of a broader strategy aimed at addressing the root causes of the vi0lence and providing a more organized approach to livestock management.

Jega’s new role is critical, as it aligns with the objectives set forth by the National Livestock Reforms Committee.

This committee’s recommendations suggest several measures to reduce the tension between agricultural and pastoral communities.
