The Population Debate: Northern vs. Southern Nigeria – Chude Sparks Nationwide netizens Discussion
A Nigerian man and tourist who identifies as Chude has used his X handle to share his observation in Nigerian population distribution after touring 24 states in the country in 4 days.
He posted,
“I have been in over 24 states in Nigeria in the past 4 days, and I can confirm say; there is no way Northern Nigeria has more human population than Southern Nigeria.”
Implied in the post is the popular narrative around how politicians use the northern region’s allegedly tick population to overpower their counterparts during electioneering times.
Not only the above, in the legislative houses, federal character considerations seem to be in the favour of the north most of the times because of the belief that the north is more populated than the South.
Expectedly, leading this position sparked reactions from people of the two blocs in the Nigerian body polity: north and south.
“Don’t let the high population density in the south fool you sha…So, yes, you’ll see empty spaces and lands, yes, you won’t see a crowd of people like you do in Lagos because people aren’t cramped in a small space”

The only thing northern Nigeria has more than the Southern Nigeria is Landmass and nothing more, if a credible and fair population census should be conducted, u will find out that the South has more population than the north, especially if u remove the “Middle Belt” since they say they’ve nothing to do with the north.”

Some dismiss the population as political propaganda meant to dece!Ve other regions while some think Chude’s claims are correct as the south is more populated than the North.
The two ends of the divide have valuable and logical proofs to sail their opinions but a government with sincere leadership strategies that are anchored on the values of honesty and integrity can conduct uninfluenced population census to determine the appropriate condition of details thereby statistically allaying this fear and differences.
