“The Police have refused to release Speed Darlington despite court order” — Akpi’s Lawyer laments
According to activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju, the police have denied rapper Darlington Okoye, also known as Speed Darlington, release, even though the Federal High Court in Abuja issued a bail ruling on Monday, December 23.
Since his re-arrest by Nigerian police in Owerri, Imo State, on November 27, the rapper has been in police detention.
He was first arrested in October following a petition filed against him by his colleague Burna Boy.
The musician was given unconditional bail, and his legal team simply needed to submit the decision to the police legal department for a minute to be taken and then forward it to the Force Investigation Department (FID), where the artist is being held, for compliance.
Since then, the singer’s attorneys have forwarded the court order to the police department, but they have not received a response or any compliance.
On Thursday, Deji Adeyanju wrote on his X account that Speed Darlington has not yet been freed by the Nigerian police.
He wrote: “The Nigerian police have refused to release Speed Darlington a.k.a. AKPI despite the explicit order of the Federal High Court to do so. This is the highest form of disrespect to the judiciary.”
He went on to release sensitive document to corroborate his account.
