Super Eagles: Former Coach Eguavoen Supports Eric Chelle but Warns of Challenges Ahead

The Nigerian football scene is buzzing with discussions over Eric Chelle’s appointment as the new Super Eagles head coach. While many are optimistic about his leadership, former coach Augustine Eguavoen has shared his thoughts on the challenges Chelle may face in managing Nigeria’s national team.

Eguavoen, who previously led the Super Eagles, has thrown his support behind Chelle but also cautioned that coaching Nigeria comes with unique pressures. He acknowledged Chelle’s impressive coaching record with Mali, where he helped develop a competitive squad, but emphasized that Nigeria’s football culture and expectations are entirely different.

“Mali has a talented squad, but Nigeria’s player pool is much larger. That means higher expectations and more pressure from fans, media, and football authorities,” Eguavoen stated.

Chelle will not have much time to settle in, as his first real test comes next week when the Super Eagles face Rwanda in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. Nigeria currently sits second in their group, trailing Rwanda by four points. The next two games—against Rwanda and Zimbabwe—will be critical in shaping the Super Eagles’ chances of securing a World Cup spot.

Eguavoen pointed out that Chelle must win over the squad, instill confidence, and ensure strong performances immediately to avoid falling behind in the qualification race.

With Nigeria desperate to return to the World Cup stage after missing out on the 2022 edition, Chelle faces an enormous task. Eguavoen believes the best approach is full support from both the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and fans, as the journey ahead will not be easy.

“Winning the remaining matches is crucial. The Super Eagles must stay focused, and Chelle needs the freedom to implement his tactics,” Eguavoen advised.

While some may be skeptical about Chelle’s ability to handle the Super Eagles, his experience with Mali proves he has the tactical knowledge to succeed. However, Nigeria is a different ball game, and he will need strong backing to navigate the challenges ahead.
