Stop Using NIVEA: NAFDAC cautions Nigerians

NAFDAC has cautioned Nigerians to stop using NIVEA.  The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) released an awareness to Nigerians. According to the statement,Nigerians are  to avoid Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant, 50ml.

NAFDAC released an awareness on its official social media pages to warn Nigerians of a deodorant,which it describes as dangerous. Below is the NAFDAC post.

Alert on the recall of Nivea Roll-on deodorant due to safety concerns by European Union Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (Rapex) Authorities.#NafdacALERT

NAFDAC alerts the public of the recall of Nivea BLACK &WHITE Invisible Roll-on deodorant, 50ml marked 48H Protection in African Climate with batch number: 93529610 by European Union (EU) Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) in Brussels.

The recalled product is said to contain 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl propionaldehyde (BMHCA), a chemical prohibited in cosmetics products. This is due to its ability to cause harm to the reproductive system, impairs the health of an unborn child as well as skin irritation and burns to users.

The details of the product are as follows:

BAR CODE NUMBER: 42299882

CATEGORY: Cosmetics

Importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers are advised to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain. This  is to avoid the importation, distribution, sale, and use of the above-mentioned Nivea Roll-on with the affected batch.

NAFDAC specified that the recalled item is the Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant, 50ml. It is labeled with 48H Protection for African Climate and bearing the batch number: 93529610. Nigerians are to stop using Nivea (Black and White Invisible Roll on deodorant).

The agency noted that the European Union’s RAPEX in Brussels withdrew the product manufactured in Germany because it contains a chemical banned in cosmetics for being detrimental to health.

The general public who have this product should stop using or selling it and return their stock to the nearest NAFDAC office. 

In addition, healthcare professionals and consumers are urged to report any adverse reactions experienced from regulated products to the nearest NAFDAC office.

“Healthcare professionals and consumers are encouraged to report any adverse events experienced with the use of regulated products to the nearest NAFDAC office. It may be via pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng, E-reporting platforms available at www.nafdac.gov.ng, or through the Med-safety application available for download on Android and iOS,” it added.

NAFDAC has released several awareness, no it has cautioned Nigerians to stop using NIVEA, mentioning the particular NIVEA product
