“Single people are not miserable or lonely” – Toke Makinwa

Nigerian media personality and entrepreneur Toke Makinwa has spoken out about the misconceptions surrounding single people, saying being single doesn’t mean lonely or unhappy.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) she called out the idea that personal fulfillment is only dependent on romantic relationships.

She said many single people are living their best lives and happy, and challenged the idea that happiness is only in a relationship.

Makinwa said self discovery and purpose is key, and to focus on your own happiness not society’s expectation to be in a relationship.

She wrote: “Beats me how some people think every single person is lonely, it’ll shock you how content and happy single people are. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good to do life with someone but if you don’t find your own purpose you can be with someone and still be lonely.”

As the year winds down, Makinwa wants us to change our perspective, to stop assuming single people are miserable or alone.

“Let that rubbish behaviour of thinking single people are miserable or lonely or sad be left in 2024. There are so many people in horrible situations (whatever you call it) that secretly wish they were alone, so let people be,” she said.

This aligns with the movement to stop society from equating relationship status to self-worth.
