Rivers: It is not a criminal offence If Fubara is impeached – Wike

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State, has weighed in on the ongoing political situation in his home state.

 In a recent media remarks, Wike made it clear that it would not be considered a “criminal offence” if Siminalayi Fubara, the current Governor of Rivers State, faces impeachment.

This statement comes amidst mounting tensions and a political crisis that has been going on in the state, creating ripples within the political sphere.

Wike, who has a longstanding influence on the state’s politics, pointed out that impeachment is a constitutional process and should be pursued if the governor has done something that warrants such a move. 

“If he has done something to be impeached, let them impeach him. It’s not a criminal offence,” Wike remarked, implying that impeachment should be a legal and procedural matter, not an illegal action.

The comments were made against the backdrop of a volatile political phase in Rivers, with Governor Fubara facing mounting pressure from the state’s legislative body.

Just recently, the Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, gave the governor a 48-hour ultimatum to present the 2025 budget. 

This followed a Supreme Court ruling that required the 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to resume their legislative duties immediately, after a period of inactivity.

The Court’s judgment, delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim, added further urgency to the already political situation in the state.

Wike expressed frustration over what he described as the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. He showed that political leadership should not be taken lightly and emphasized the need to uphold the rule of law.
