Putin Blames Ukraine Conflict on 2020 US Election
Russian President Vladimir Putin blames the war in Ukraine for perhaps being avoidable had the then US President Donald Trump won the presidential election in 2020. Putin described Trump as “pragmatic” and “smart,” and was ready to negotiate with him to bring an end to the war in Ukraine.

In a recent interview, Putin expressed readiness to meet with Trump in an effort to iron out a number of issues, such as the crisis in Ukraine, among others. He said, “We have noted Trump’s willingness for collective work and are ready for it” adding that there might be areas of cooperation in the strategic and economic spheres as well.
Trump who was freshly re-elected into his second term, has bragged that within 24 hours of hostilities, he would have stopped the war and called for an emergency meeting with Putin to make an agreement on the way out of the conflict. He has even threatened to unleash new sanctions on Russia if, within short order, no peace deal emerges.
Even as Putin has shown himself willing to talk about peace, the rhetoric from the Kremlin has been incoherent, with the West regularly accused of backing what it describes as the “illegitimate Kyiv regime.” This sets a background of speculation about an ailing Russian economy and internal pressure on him to keep the war alive.
Observers, however, noted that even as both leaders indicated a willingness to talk, significant obstacles remained. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has ruled out any direct talks with Putin, which makes negotiations hard. Even more so, Putin’s preconditions for peace are the lifting of sanctions, the withdrawal of Ukraine from some territories, the abandonment of its NATO aspiration, and the substantial weakening of its military issues not likely to be acceded to by Ukraine and the West.
The whole world keeps following these events very carefully, knowing that relations among the United States and Russian leaders are one of the determining factors in the dynamics of events going on in Ukraine.
