Acting Army Chief, Lieutenant General Oluyede has paid a operational visit to the caliphate city, Sokoto.
The visit of the Acting Army Chief comes a few days after the Defence Headquarters confirmed the entry of a new terr0ri$t group known as ‘Lakurawa’.
The Lakurawas are currently resident in Sokoto and Kebbi states. The group is currently thr£@tening five different local governments in Sokoto state
The Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, stated that the new ter*or group is causing insecurity in the North-West region of Nigeria but the Armed Forces of Nigeria are already containing them.
“Troops are confronted with a new terrorist sect in the North-West. This sect is known as Lakuwaras, the Lakurawas are affiliated to terrorists in the Sahel particularly from Mali and Niger Republic
“They began an incursion into the Northern part of Nigeria, mainly Sokoto and Kebbi states, and like I mentioned, they came in from the Niger and Mali axis,” General Buba said.
The Acting Army Chief, Oluyede, stated that the new te*ror group emerged from Mali and the Republic of Niger after the co*p that led to the breakdown of military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger.
As a result of the new group’s threat, the military has declared nine ter*0rists wanted for the roles they played in the security challenges facing the nation.
Addressing troops deployed in Tangaza and Illela, Gen Oluyede commended the troops for their sacrifice and commitment in the ongoing fight against te*ror!sm and !nsurg*ncy in the North West zone of the country.
The Acting Army Chief disclosed that he was on an operational visit to get first-hand information and assess the security situation and challenges of the Nigerian Army troops.
