National Security Update: More Than 5,000 Boko Haram Fighters Successfully Reintegrated

More than 5,000 former Boko Haram fighters have been reunited with their families and successfully reintegrated into society, according to the National Counter-T£rrorism Centre (NCTC).

This announcement was made by Ambassador Mairo Musa Abbas, Head of Preventing and Countering Viol£nt Extremism (PCVE), at the ongoing Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum.

Abbas said that six months after finishing the six-month Operation Safe Corridor deradicalization program, these former militants have not returned to the battlefield.

They are now using the talents they acquired to support themselves in their communities instead.

“The former fighters are now engaged in productive activities, leveraging the skills they acquired during the program to rebuild their lives,” Abbas stated.

She emphasized that the National Orientation Agency (NOA), in collaboration with traditional and religious leaders, continues to monitor the progress of these individuals to ensure their successful reintegration.

Abbas also cited the Borno Model’s achievements, a state-led reintegration plan that has made a substantial contribution to regional peacebuilding initiatives.

In order to ensure more long-term stability, she urged regional governors and other interested parties to coordinate their efforts and develop a more cohesive strategy for the reintegration process.

This successful reintegration program represents a significant step in Nigeria’s efforts to combat t£rrorism and rehabilitate individuals involved in viol£nt extremism.
