NAFDAC Issues Strong Warning to Frozen Food Vendors
Dealers of frozen foods have been warned by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to cease selling and distributing illegal and unregistered goods.
On Friday, the agency announced this at a one-day awareness-raising event at Abuja’s Kado Fish Market.
Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, emphasised that in order to promote local farmers, the importation and distribution of prohibited products must cease.
She reaffirmed NAFDAC’s determination to end the illicit manufacture, sale, and distribution of unregistered packaged food, water, and other regulated goods.
The initiative’s goal, she said, is to protect public health, especially during the holiday season.
“This sensitisation programme is designed to ensure good storage and distribution practices in the market because properly stored food products maintain quality before consumption.
“We are here at Kado Fish Market, the largest fish market in North-Central Nigeria, to ensure that frozen chicken, fish, and meat products are appropriately stored and safe for public consumption”.
She asked members of the market association to make buying locally produced and NAFDAC-registered frozen goods a top priority in order to guarantee consumer safety and quality.
Adeyeye threatened to take strong enforcement action against anyone who disobeyed the federal government’s ban on the importation of frozen chicken, turkey, and catfish.
Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed, the Chairman of the Frozen Food Sellers Association at Kado Fish Market, praised the awareness-raising initiative and promised the association’s backing for NAFDAC’s rules.
Mohammed, however, urged NAFDAC to apply its rules equitably and humanely.
