Mikel Obi Speaks Out Against Drug Culture While playing for Chelsea Amid Mudryk Controversy
In an attempt to shed light on the difficulties encountered by professional football players, former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi has disclosed that he was offered performance-enhancing drugs while he was at Chelsea.
Mikel’s remarks followed Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk’s recent suspension when the Football Association temporarily suspended him after he tested positive for drugs earlier this week.
Even though he denied doing anything wrong.
During his appearance on the Obi One Podcast, Mikel emphasised the idea of innocence until proven guilty while expressing sympathy for Mudryk. Mikel remarked, “For him and his family, I hope he is innocent.”
The former Chelsea midfielder reflected on his personal experiences, describing how friends or acquaintances would sometimes approach players with drugs in the hopes of improving their performance.
They’d say, ‘This will give you an extra one or two percent in your game.’ I always asked, ‘What is this? Is it legal?’ If I wasn’t satisfied, I would tell them to leave,” Mikel explained.
He stressed the importance of personal accountability, adding, “As players, we’re responsible for what we put in our bodies. For now, Mudryk deserves the benefit of the doubt.”
Discussions around football doping have been rekindled by the incident, and observers and supporters are waiting for more research to ascertain Mudryk’s future.
