Kemi Afolabi Refutes Claims Against Mercy Aigbe Amidst Devastating Fire Incident
Kemi Afolabi, a Nigerian movie star speaks to defend her colleague, Mercy Aigbe, who has been the subject of incessant online bullying since a fire gutted her Lagos house. Reports say items destroyed by the fire had an estimated value running into millions of naira.
It got so bad that following a video she posted of herself showing the aftermath, some social media users accused her of orchestrating the fire as publicity for her coming movie titled “Thinline”. This whipped up a storm of criticism as detractors even dragged her personal life, particularly her marriage, into the conversation.
In a now-emotional video shared on her Instagram page, Kemi Afolabi cleared the air, stating the rumor was insensitive and baseless. The 46-year-old actress, while speaking with her fans, urged the public to show love and not hate during such critical moments.
I am begging in the name of Mercy, she didn’t send me and I know she is always a strong woman. “Please, any support you can give her at this time, stop trolling her. How can someone allow her house to be burnt to promote a movie?” Afolabi urged.
Emphasizing how the fire burnt Aigbe’s house and properties to a cinder, Afolabi gave a good account of how disastrous the situation was to befall her colleague’s life. The personal properties, camera, film equipment which are so costly, and the house all became a raze; thus, showing the seriousness of the situation.
Afolabi asked fans and viewers to show a bit more empathy since Aigbe has been through so much over the past few months. “Forget whatever you guys might have against her. All she needs is your support. How can somebody allow her house to burn to promote a movie? That’s not fair,” she said.
This is not the first time Afolabi has spoken up on social issues or stood up for her colleagues in trying times. The actress recently hit the headlines when she broke her silence on her struggles, and that too received an unprecedented amount of public and professional empathy and solidarity as well.
Meanwhile, Mercy Aigbe has continued to show determination in the face of online trolling of her and her family. Her response illustrates strength, while she navigates her public life and the complicated private one, with controversies surrounding her marriage to movie marketer Kazim Adeoti.
