The Rivers State Government has expressed deep shock over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove Governor Fubara while leaving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who has been accused of fueling the state’s ongoing political crisis.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Warisenibo Joe Johnson, described the development as unjust. He emphasized that Governor Fubara had remained committed to constitutional order, peace, and good governance despite the political turbulence in the state.

According to Johnson, since assuming office, Fubara has prioritized the protection of lives and property, ensuring that Rivers State remains on a path of progress. Even amid political instability, the governor upheld his constitutional duties and placed the interests of the people above personal or political considerations.

“Governor Fubara has never deviated from his commitment to peace and democratic governance. Despite the challenges, he ensured that the state functioned effectively, with salaries being paid and developmental projects ongoing,” Johnson stated.

He recalled that following President Tinubu’s intervention to broker peace in Rivers, the state government implemented the agreed terms in good faith. This included the reinstatement of commissioners who had previously resigned and swift compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling upon receiving the certified true copy of the judgment.

Despite these efforts, Johnson lamented that lawmakers loyal to Wike, the former governor of Rivers State, had continued to disrupt peace and stability. He expressed surprise and disappointment that while Fubara had been removed, Wike—whom he described as the principal actor in the crisis—remained in office.

“It is shocking that Mr. President sacked the governor and left his minister, who is the principal actor in this political crisis,” Johnson remarked.

He suggested that Fubara’s removal raises concerns about fairness in addressing the political situation in Rivers State.

Reassuring the people of Rivers, Johnson affirmed that governance remains effective despite the ongoing political challenges. He urged residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding, emphasizing the government’s commitment to democratic principles and engagement with relevant institutions to ensure justice.

“We have always been a resilient people, and we will face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process,” he said.
