“I used to rap in English but…” – Phyno reveals why he only raps in Igbo
One of the most frequently asked questions in Nigeria—why does Phyno always rap in Igbo—has finally been answered by the Rap legend.
In a thrilling episode in the “IN MY OPINION” podcast, Phyno was asked why he preferred to always rap in Igbo. This is one of the most frequent questions most fans ask the rap artist.
He had various responses to this question and stated why he wants to put the Igbo language on the world stage.
“Igbo is the best language I know. I grew up and schooled in the eastern part of Nigeria. I love communicating in Igbo, especially if you can speak it back to me.
To the surprise of everyone, Phyno shared how he used to rap in English at some point in his career.
“At some point in my life when I was still trying to find myself, I was rapping in English too, but when I got to a point where I had to make a career out of this, I asked myself a simple question: What am I going to sell to the world?”
In further revelation, the acclaimed rapper pointed to the fact that selling English rap to the Westerners would spell doom for him as they already own English, so he had no other option but to sell Igbo because he owns it.
“If I sell something you don’t have, it becomes an enigma, a mystery, and you will enjoy what I’m bringing.”
This message sent chills to his fans as they commended him for being so intentional and making wise decisions in his career. As a fan stated, “Aristotle dey learn work for where Phyno dey. Man speaks brilliantly… “I can’t sell you what you have.”
He also shared how his upbringing in a high-life-influenced neighborhood influenced his decision to dig deep into high-life music.
Igbo lovers have come to credit him for making sure Igbo is projected beyond the shores of Africa. His fans have seemed to relate to him better regarding the fact that he doesn’t hide where he comes from and will always represent his culture no matter what.
