How my parents rejected me – Jumoke George
Popular Nigerian actress Jumoke George has spoken about how she grew up with trouble in her childhood due to parental rejection, which led to personal problems. During an interview with Biola Bayo on the “Talk to B” show, she told the problems she passed through right from her tender age.
Jumoke narrated how her stepmother sent her to a herbalist’s house to make food with concoctions to hypnotize her father, making her feel like a nonentity. She said, “You can’t even handle a slave the way they handled me.”
When she eventually gathered the courage to report her maltreatment to her father, he never believed her and even disowned her. At that point, Jumoke slept in abandoned cars and sew her clothes with safety pins. As she remembered: “I was sleeping around; I even slept on the table they used for selling goods by the roadside.”
Her relationship with her mum was strained, too; this was as a result of her earlier decision to stay with her father following the separation between her parents. In later years, her mother apologized and explained that those earlier actions were because of ignorance and misunderstanding. Jumoke said, “She pleaded with me that I should forgive her, that she didn’t have Christ, and it was a time of ignorance.”
Aside from family problems, Jumoke suffered domestic v!ol£nce in her marriage. She recounted how she suffered constant abuse at the hands of her ex-husband while she was pregnant and in public. “When pregnancy came in, my journey with him was like going from frying pan to fire; he will always beat me.”
But Jumoke George rose through all these adversities to carve a name for herself in Nollywood for over four decades. She started her acting career at the age of eight years with stage dramas for the Nigerian Television Authority, Ibadan. Through her career, she has appeared in movies both in Yoruba and English, such as “The Wedding Party” and “Love Castle.”
Her resilience and commitment to the craft have seen her get some recognition in the Nigerian entertainment industry. In 2018, she was honored with the “City People Movie Matriarch Recognition Award” for a lifetime of dedication and invaluable contribution to Nollywood.
