House of Rep Reject Bill to Create Single Six Year Term for Elected Executives

The House of Representatives has rejected a bill seeking to provide a single six year term for president, governors and other executive political office holders

It was rejected by the House of Rep at the Thursday plenary. The bill would have scaled it’s second reading

The bill is sponsored by Honourable Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere and 33 other representatives.

The bill also seeks to provide that, all elections should be held on the same day, meaning that there will be no more off-cycle elections in all states of the federation

The now rejected bill was titled in quote, “A Bill for an Act to Alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to create a single six year term for the office of President and State Governors. To recognize the division of Nigeria into the six geopolitical zones, provide for the rotation of the office of President, State Governor and chairman of a Local Government Council among the Inherent regions and zones, and provide that all elections be held on a single day and for Related Matters (HB. 1511)”.

The Bill was introduced for second reading by the lead sponsor, Honourable Ugochinyere.

However, when the bill was put into voice vote by the Speaker, Abbas Tajuddeen, there was a loud ‘Nay’ from the members, which is a sign of disagreement or rejection of the bill.

The Speaker therefore announced that the ‘Nays’ means that the bill was rejected and failed to scale through the second reading.

This bill has now been rejected for the second time as the same bill was introduced under the Good luck Johnathan administration but was also failed to scale through.
