Headies vs. Grammys: Ayo Animashaun Highlights Shift in Nigerian Music Awards Loyalty
Mr. Ayo Animashaun, the Headies Awards’ executive producer, has criticised the Grammys’ widespread appeal in Nigeria.

Speaking to Channels Television in an interview, he stated that the ordinary Nigerian music fan now prefers and celebrates the American-based award event over the local Headies Awards, which have recognised excellence in Nigerian music for 20 years.
Speaking about the difficulties the award has had recently, Animshaun stated that holding the award every year is not economically viable.
“The Grammys are more popular in the streets of Lagos and in Nigeria than they are in America,” the media executive and entrepreneur stated.
He revealed in the interview that the Hip Hop World Magazine was founded with the intention of advancing and bolstering Nigerian entertainment.
The CEO of HIP TV added that in order for Nigeria’s creative sector to realise its full potential, government patronage and backing are required.
The Headies Awards, formerly known as the Hip Hop World Award, have honoured Nigerian music annually since their launch in 2006.
This explains why the award was not given out in 2024 due to the recent gap year and why the 2022 and 2023 editions were hosted in the US.
