Food Security: “Nigerians have no reason to go hungry” — Vice President Shettima 

As Nigeria are passing through a growing food crisis, Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasized that the country has the resources and potential to eliminate hunger.

Speaking at the inauguration of Springfield Agro Limited’s Crop Protection Chemical Plant in Ogun State, Shettima, represented by the Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, assured that hunger should not be a concern for Nigerians, given the nation’s vast agricultural potential.

During his address, Shettima revealed Nigeria’s favorable climate, extensive arable land, and abundant resources capable of ensuring both domestic food security and the potential for food exports.

However, he expressed concern that many farmers rely solely on the rainy season, leaving their farms idle during the dry season.

“We have vast potential, but we have primarily focused on rainy season farming. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) is changing this narrative by promoting year-round farming, including both wet and dry seasons,” he said.

Shettima called on farmers to collaborate with their state ministries of agriculture, as the government works to create a comprehensive database for agricultural development.

The Vice President also highlighted the government’s immediate focus on rice production. He assured that the government would work to identify and register farmers, ensuring they receive the necessary support, including fertilizers—both organic and inorganic—where required.

Agriculture remains a top priority for President Bola Tinubu, according to Shettima.

He emphasized that the government’s programs aim to boost farmers’ productivity and yields through technological advancements, mechanization, and research.

“We are committed to removing barriers and supporting businesses like Springfield Agro to achieve these goals,” he said.
