First bank to have a new name – “to become First Holdco PLC”

First Bank of Nigeria Holdings Plc, a leading financial institution in Nigeria, has officially renamed to First Holdco Plc as part of the transformation process to enrich its brand image and streamline its operations. This decision was approved by shareholders during the 12th Virtual Annual General Meeting on November 14, 2024. This has been symbolic in creating a new and cohesive image towards customers while operating locally and in the global market.

This move to change the name from First Bank Holdings Plc to First Holdco Plc is also aimed at neutralizing an unenviable listing and enhancing the branding profile. The change, the bank said in a statement, was meant to ‘establish a consistent image’ that would be easily understood by all its various stakeholders and customers. This is especially characteristic for a banking company with a rich history on the financial market; it tries to update its image and become more attractive to the customer while keeping their trust.

The company’s secretary, Adewale Arogundade, reiteratively pointed out that the decision for the name change applies across FBN Holdings and all its subsidiary companies. Such a strategy ensures that the new identity is well established in all spheres of the organization and thus strengthens the position of a brand in the market. The statement from First Bank reads:

That the existing legal and brand name of the company as FBN Holdings Plc and FBN Holdings should be changed to First Holdco Plc and FirstHoldco, respectively.”

This involved going to shareholders to seek their approval on some of the changes that were being offered as part of the rebranding process. Besides the name change, the company’s resolution during the AGM reflected on the plans to obtain N350 billion through public offerings and private placements. This capital-boosting exercise is intended to build up the bank’s financial reserves and enable it to fund more of its development strategies.

The resolution further reads:

That after going through with the processes for change of name, alteration of the company’s share capital, and allotment of the new ordinary shares as provided in the above resolutions of the company, the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the Company be updated to reflect the new trading name and the new issued share capital.

Such financial strategies would enable First Bank to get the necessary capital to expand and diversify its service delivery more efficiently. This strategy entails more than a mere change of the bank’s name and some colorful logos; the bank is poised and committed to innovation and delivering superior services to its clients.

The consequences of this kind of name change are tremendous in various aspects. Firstly, it will change the concept of the bank’s positioning and rebranding to reflect modern principles and approaches to the banking field and consumers. A new name for First Bank is strategic because it will enhance its competitiveness in a world where consumers base their loyalty on the brands a firm adopts.

First Bank, through the rebranding exercise, is entering the Nigerian banking industry at a time when the industry is experiencing a major change. In this regard, with mounting pressure from fintech firms and other financial service providers, conventional commercial banks are forced to develop long-term and short-term strategies. It is not simply a case of changing the colors and logo; the change to rebrand represents rational business decision-making in response to the factors that characterize the market today.
