“I Didn’t Know I Was Privileged” – DJ Cuppy Speaks on Childhood

Florence Otedola aka DJ Cuppy recently shared her childhood experiences and revealed she didn’t know her family was wealthy growing up. The popular DJ and daughter of billionaire Femi Otedola took to her X (formerly Twitter) to reflect.

In her post, DJ Cuppy said growing up she didn’t fully understand her privileged background. She said she never had to worry about basic things and now understands that’s a luxury for many. She emphasized gratitude and said what she thought was normal is what others wish for.

This isn’t the first time DJ Cuppy has spoken about her upbringing. She previously credited her father for raising her with a strong work ethic and resilience. She wrote in a post from April 2024; “Shoutout to @realFemiOtedola for raising me to be a modern day man even though I’m his daughter.” This shows her father taught her to be independent and hardworking regardless of gender norms.

Despite being born into wealth, DJ Cuppy has always noted that she has been making lots of personal efforts to build her career up to the current level it is at. She has also debunked the misconception that many people, including her fans have about her level; that she reached it all because of her father’s wealth. In a recent interview, she further spoke on the matter, saying that connections can actually open doors but sustained success like hers requires lots of individual effort and talent.

Beyond her music career, DJ Cuppy is also known for her philanthropic work. She founded the Cuppy Foundation in 2018 to improve the lives of less privileged children and young people in Nigeria. One of the foundation’s major achievements was raising over N5 billion (approximately $13 million) for the “Save the Children” initiative in November 2019.
