Daniel Regha Criticizes Church Camera Practices During Deliverance Sessions
Nigerian social commentator Daniel Regha once stirred a discourse into the practices of the church via tweet. Recently, he did take to X (formerly Twitter) to talk about some of the most frowned-upon topics: churches recording deliverance sessions. As he puts it:
“Church camera crew, please, never ‘Zoom in’ on people during deliverance time; Ogbanje and other principalities cannot be seen through the lens, and neither would those being delivered like such moments documented. Stop.”
The tweet from Regha has garnered mixed reactions online, with many arguing about the appropriateness or necessity of documenting such moments.
Another user, @popterai, lightened it a bit and made it more about the collective idea that goes down during the church services: “Today na thanksgiving for almost all the churches. Let’s talk about food.” Another, @Jaysings001, condemned the very notion of deliverance sessions as practised today: “Them no dey do any deliverance for church, na just show off to bring in new members.”
Some even argued against Regha with reference to their usefulness in such recordings. For example, @OJOADISA1 wrote, “Church need documentary of what is going on within church for reference.” Similar sentiments were shared by @Nazehsdom, exclaiming that those recordings are done for the sake of the church and not for the deliverance of those getting delivered: “Obviously, it’s not ’cause of the person getting delivered but the church that needs such documentations unfortunately.”
Others took it humorously, teasingly suggesting that “Ogbanje” spirits may just appear in front of the camera. @mrsanctus01 teased, “Who tell you say Ogbanje can’t be seen while on zoom with a camera lens. Till I buy iPhone 16 Pro Max.” @Mister_Uche was rather skeptical of the claim: “You no wan make we see Ogbanje look like? Mr. Dan, you lie.”
The argument even went as far as to get theological when @Yolanda113226 drew some biblical allusions: “I think u re correct. Buh a particular chapter in the Bible stated that all those miracles are evidence for the proclamation of the holy spirit (Apostle Paul). Buh in the account of Jesus Christ, whenever he heals people, he tells them not to exclamate it out.”
Most of Regha’s comments have been against more traditionalist church habits, thus provoking broad online discussions.
