Burna Boy Biography, Background, and Net Worth

Burna Boy (Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu) was born on July 2, 1991 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. His dad Samuel Ogulu managed a welding company and his mom Bose Ogulu was a translator and later his manager.

Burna Boy’s granddad Benson Idonije managed the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti so music runs in the family. He spent his early years in Ahoada, Rivers State before the family moved to Lagos where he completed his primary school.

Burna Boy went to University of Sussex for media technology 2008-2009 and furthered his studies in media communications and culture at Oxford Brookes University 2009-2010. Upon returning to Nigeria, he interned at Rhythm 93.7 FM in Port Harcourt which marked the beginning of his journey into the music industry.

Music Career and Awards

Burna Boy’s music career started in 2010 but he gained recognition in 2012 with the release of “Like to Party” the lead single from his debut album L.I.F.E which was released in 2013. The album showcased his unique blend of Afrobeat, dancehall, reggae and hip-hop which he calls “Afro-fusion”. In 2017 he signed to Atlantic Records in the US and Warner Music Group internationally and released his third studio album Outside in 2018. The album featured the hit single “Ye” which boosted his international profile.

Burna Boy’s fourth studio album African Giant (2019) got great reviews and was nominated for Best World Music Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. He followed up with Twice as Tall in 2020 which won the Best World Music Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards making him the first Nigerian to win in that category. His subsequent albums Love, Damini (2022) and I Told Them… (2023) have been well received and solidified his status as a global music icon.

He has multiple income streams, album sales, streaming, concert tours and brand endorsements.
