Borno Governor Zulun on protesting Minors, says he is not happy for their release

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the federal government’s decision to release minors involved in recent protests, stating that they should have remained in remand to serve as a deterrent to others. The governor’s comments have ignited reactions from various quarters, with many Nigerians attacking him for his statement.

During a public appearance,  Zulum voiced his discontent with the decision made by the administration of President Bola Tinubu, which saw the release of several minors who were detained during protests against government policies. According to the governor, while he recognized that the minors were not directly responsible for the unrest, he believed that their continued detention would serve as an important lesson to deter other young Nigerians from engaging in similar actions.

Zulum’s statement reads, “While I understand that these minors were part of the protest, I believe they should have remained in remand, not only for the sake of justice but as a warning to others who might be tempted to engage in unlawful activities. This will ensure that the rule of law is respected and that young people understand the consequences of their actions.”

The governor’s remarks have ignited criticism across social media platforms and among human rights groups, who argue that the release of the minors was a positive step, aimed at protecting the rights of children and ensuring that they are not subjected to undue punishment. Critics have also pointed out that such a position undermines the efforts of the government to promote reform and uphold democratic values, particularly in terms of protecting vulnerable groups such as children.

Prominent Nigerian human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, took to X (formally Twitter) to condemn Zulum’s comments, stating, “It is disheartening to see a leader fail to understand the importance of protecting children, regardless of their involvement in protests. We cannot sacrifice the future of our youth for short-term political gains.”
