Basketmouth was born on 14th September 1978 in Lagos State, Nigeria. He’s from Abia State but grew up in Lagos. He attended primary and secondary school in Apapa, Lagos and later went to the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Edo State where he studied Sociology and Anthropology.

Career
Basketmouth started his artistic journey in 1991 when he discovered his talent for drumming. In 1994 he started rapping and in 1995 he formed a group called “Da Psychophats”. The group didn’t release any tracks and disbanded. Unfazed Basketmouth, his brother Godwin and friend Muyiwa Ola-Phillips formed another group called “Da Oddz”. They performed at shows but didn’t get mainstream recognition as their style of rap wasn’t popular in Nigeria then.
Transition to Comedy
Faced with challenges in his music career Basketmouth shifted his focus to comedy. His style of humor quickly resonated with people and he got wide recognition. He gained popularity through his stand-up show and later decided to organize successful comedy shows including the “Basketmouth Uncensored” series which got international recognition.

Basketmouth was married to Elsie Uzoma Okpocha and they have two kids Jason and Janelle. In December 2022 he announced they were parting ways after 12 years of marriage.
