Ayodeji Richard Makun, popularly known as AY Makun, was born on August 19, 1971 in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria. Even though he hails from Ifon in the Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, A.Y spent his early years in Warri.

He studied Theatre Arts in Delta State University which took longer than 9 years due to some challenged he had however, he remained committed to his passion for the arts. During AY Makun’s university days, he was actively involved in campus life going on to win several awards including Most Fashionable Student on Campus in 1999 and 2000 and Most Celebrated Student on Campus in 2001.
Career Beginnings
A.Y’s foray into the entertainment industry started during his university days. He gained recognition by working as a personal assistant and event manager to the renowned comedian Alibaba Akporobome. He got mentorship and exposure to the comedy world. A.Y further sharpened his comedic skills by contributing as a guest columnist to national publications like The Sun and Gbenga Adeyinka’s “Laugh Mattaz”.
In 2006, AY Makun launched “AY Live” a comedy show that has become one of the most popular and consistently sold out events in Nigeria. The show is a fusion of stand-up comedy, skits and musical performance and draws a diverse crowd. AY Makun went further to expand his brand with comedy skits and the sitcom “AY’s Crib” which further solidified his presence in the industry.
Venturing into Nollywood, A.Y made a huge impact with his debut production “30 Days in Atlanta” in 2014. The film he produced and featured in was directed by Robert O. Peters and got critical acclaim for its humor and storytelling. After that, A.Y produced and featured in other box office hits like “A Trip to Jamaica” and “Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons” showing his versatility as an actor and producer.
Personal Life
AY is married to Mabel Makun, a successful interior designer and CEO of Midas Interiors Ltd. They got married in 2008 and have a daughter named Michelle. A.Y often credits his family for his success.
Philanthropy and Mentorship
AY Makun gives back to the society by establishing the “AY Open Mic Challenge” a platform to discover and nurture up coming comedians in Nigeria. This has been a launch pad for several successful comedians and shows A.Y’s commitment to the growth of the entertainment industry.
