AMAA: Jagun Jagun wins 3 awards amidst 7 nominations

Jagun Jagun recently, achieved great success at the 2024 edition of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA)  which recognizes the best works of African cinematographs. The movie clinched three notable awards that established it firmly in the Nollywood industry.

The AMAA is an important festival in the African movie domain, as it introduces Africa’s potential movie makers and producers to the world. Organized annually, this was the 20th year of the awards, which took place in Lagos State, Nigeria. The event was a colorful affair focusing on African storytelling, where several films vied for awards within different categories.

Not only was Jagun Jagun a cultural success, it was equally successful at the box office within Nigeria and abroad. The film was nominated in seven categories, which proves that it can be interesting to a wide audience as well as the fact that the film was made at a high level. The categories included:

It has been quite an accomplishment to win three out of these seven categories. 

The Competition

However, though Jagun Jagun continues to sparkle brightly at the AMAA, it was not the only movie that was awarded. Another film that dominated the night was The Weekend by Daniel Oriahi

, with four awards, including the Best Film.

Adebayo’s dream for Nollywood

For quite some time now, Femi Adebayo has supported the development and promotion of Nollywood as a standard player on the international film market. The success with Jagun Jagun is actually a dream to transform Nigerian cinema and demonstrate it’s capacity. In his own words, Adebayo said,

 ‘’We are no longer making films—wwe are sharing our stories, and the world is learning.’’ 

This feeling is a result of a changing trend whereby most African filmmakers are willing to present their works globally.

As more movies receive global accolades, the world becomes aware of the different narratives from the African filmmakers.
