In a statement issued Saturday in Abuja, Oyekanmi described the claims as baseless, urging the public to disregard the misinformation.

According to him, “Our attention has been drawn to a fake news narrative circulated by a section of social media, claiming the purported d£ath of the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, at a London hospital”.

This is categorically false. He further clarified that Prof. Yakubu has not visited London in over two years and has been actively performing his duties in Nigeria.

The alleged story, which was first published on Monday, December 9, was discredited by the chief press secretary and warned against fake publication on social media.

Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi emphasized the Commission’s commitment to collaborating with responsible media outlets to counter misinformation.

This remark comes amidst increasing concerns over the spread of fake news in Nigeria, particularly on social media platforms.

Oyekanmi concluded with an appeal to the public to verify news from credible sources before sharing. “Prof. Yakubu is alive, hale, and hearty, and remains dedicated to the Commission’s work. The public should disregard this rumor in its entirety,” he said.
