BREAKING: Jubilation rocks social media as court denies granting bail to Yahaya Bello
Federal high court on Tuesday denied bail to Yahaya Bello, former governor of Kogi State, Nigeria, who is facing multiple charges of corruption, financial misappropriation, and ab$se of power.
The court’s decision has drawn widespread reactions with many Nigerians celebrating the ruling on social media platforms.
The presiding judge, Justice Aminu Suleiman, ruled that granting bail to Bello could potentially interfere with the ongoing investigation and prosecution.
He cited concerns over the defendant’s influence and the severity of the charges, which include alleged embezzlement of public funds amounting to billions of naira during his tenure as governor.
“The evidence presented by the prosecution so far is compelling. The defendant poses a flight risk and may use his resources to obstruct justice if granted bail,” Justice Suleiman stated during the hearing.

Yahaya Bello’s legal team has announced plans to appeal the decision, arguing that the former governor is entitled to bail under Nigerian law. Lead counsel for the defense, Barrister Olusegun Adeyemi, stated: “Our client maintains his innocence and believes that the truth will come to light. We will pursue all legal avenues to ensure his rights are protected.”
Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the prosecuting body, welcomed the ruling, emphasizing the importance of holding public officials accountable.
“The fight against corruption is far from over, but this decision shows our commitment to ensuring justice for the Nigerian people,” said EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren.
