Kanayo O. Kanayo Backs Davido Amid Controversy Over Nigeria’s Economy Comment
Kanayo O. Kanayo, a popular actor in Nollywood supported Davido, a famous Afrobeats musician, who recently faced adverse responses over his statement about Nigeria’s struggling economy.
During an interview on The Big Homies House podcast, the famous musician discouraged African Americans from relocating to Nigeria, stating that the country is in a deteriorating economic situation. In his words, “the economy is in shambles.” His statement has brought lots of reactions, and support, as well as criticism on social media platforms.
Kanayo, sharing his thoughts in a video from the United Kingdom, emphasized the importance of free speech. He argued that Davido’s comments were controversial but meant no harm. According to Kanayo, Davido is looking at the challenges that ordinary Nigerians are facing even though he is from a rich background.
He said, “Nigerians make una leave Davido alone about the comment he made; it’s freedom of speech and he made it in good faith. It is left for those in power to work harder to give us a better Nigeria. We need to build a better Nigeria.”
The actor also addressed calls for Davido to issue an apology, dismissing them as unwarranted. “Some people say he should apologize; apologize for what? He’s a Nigerian and he made his statement in good faith. Those who criticize us want the best out of us. Davido and his family can feed well but he speaks for other Nigerians who cannot,” Kanayo added.
Davido’s remarks have drawn mixed reactions. Critics, including public figures such as Joe Igbokwe and former presidential aide Reno Omokri, labeled his comments unpatriotic, accusing him of tarnishing Nigeria’s global image. Igbokwe urged Davido to retract his statement, claiming that “Nigeria made Davido.” Others pointed to Davido’s affluent upbringing and family ties, such as his billionaire father and his uncle, who is a sitting governor, arguing that he benefits from the system he criticized.
Apart from supporters like Kanayo, social commentator DJ Switch also cheered Davido on for speaking the truth. They argued that his comments show the realities many Nigerians face daily.
Lots of social media users also defended the singer, adding that addressing the nation’s economic challenges openly is necessary for progress.
