Illinois Supreme Court Overturn Jussie Smollet Case.

The Supreme Court of the state of Illinois has overturned the initial conviction of former Empire star, Jussie Smollet. He played “Jamal” on the show. Smollet was found guilty of five counts of disorderly conduct for falsely filing a report of hate crime against himself in 2021. He claimed he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack in January 2019.

Ever since, he has been appealing his case. He struck a plea deal to forfeit his existent $10,000 bond and complete his 15 community services, which he did till the end. Afterwards, he was prosecuted in March 2022 and sentenced to 150 days in the county jail. He was let out early and his lawyers appealed the prosecution.

The advent of this overturned decision was necessitated by the resolution of a special prosecutor who sought to retry Smollet’s case after the Cook County State Attorney’s Office initially dropped all charges against him. The Illinois Supreme Court thought this move violated his rights.

In a statement made by his lawyer, he disclosed how happy he was about the court’s decision. “This was not a prosecution based on facts, rather it was a vindictive persecution and such a proceeding has no place in our criminal justice system. Ultimately, we are pleased that the rule of law was the big winner today,” Uche said. In summary, Jussie Smollet is a free man.
