Simon Ekpa, a Finnish-Nigerian separatist leader and self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government In-Exile, has been arrested in Finland along with four others for alleged terrorism-related offenses.
The Päijät-Häme District Court has remanded Ekpa in custody on charges of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.
On Thursday, November 21, the Finnish Central Criminal Police confirmed the arrest of five individuals suspected of involvement in terrorist activities. According to the police statement, Simon Ekpa is the primary suspect, detained “on suspicion of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent,” while four others face allegations of “financing a terrorist crime.”
The investigation focuses on “a Finnish citizen of Nigerian background, born in the 1980s, suspected of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent,” the police said. It alleges that Ekpa used his position in Finland to promote violence against civilians and authorities, as well as other crimes in South-Eastern Nigeria.
Crime Commissioner Otto Hiltunen, leading the investigation, noted that “the man has carried out this activity, among other things, on his social media channels.”
The four additional suspects are accused of providing financial support for the alleged activities. “All five suspects of the crime have been arrested during the beginning of the week,” the statement read, emphasizing the role of international collaboration in the preliminary investigation.
The Päijät-Häme District Court will hear the claims against the suspects today, November 21.
