Ondo Poll: Tinubu Calls For Peaceful Exercise, Commends INEC’s Preparedness
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for a peaceful electoral process as Ondo State prepares for its governorship election on November 16. Addressing Nigerians in a statement released on Friday, Tinubu lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its readiness, emphasizing the need for unity and calm during the voting exercise. He urged citizens to uphold democratic values, saying, “Elections are the cornerstone of democracy, and I commend INEC for its efforts to ensure a credible process. I call on all Nigerians, especially Ondo residents, to conduct themselves peacefully.”
Tinubu’s comments, however, have sparked widespread reactions across Nigeria. While some acknowledged the importance of peace, others expressed deep skepticism about INEC’s impartiality and the sincerity of the APC-led government. Critics argue that past elections have been marred by allegations of bias, irregularities, and logistical challenges.
A resident of Ondo State, Olumide Adebayo, stated, “We’ve heard promises before, but the reality is different. How can we trust INEC or the APC to deliver a free and fair election?” Another Nigerian commented on social media, “Peace is important, but credibility is more important. INEC and APC need to show they are truly committed to democracy.”
INEC has assured the public of its readiness, highlighting measures to prevent irregularities and ensure transparency. Nevertheless, many Nigerians remain unconvinced, citing past electoral controversies as a reason for their doubts.
Political analysts from different party affiliations believe the Ondo election will be a critical test for both INEC and the Tinubu administration, as public trust in the electoral system continues to waver.
