Marcelo terminates contract at Fluminense

In an unexpected twist of events, we have seen the Brazilian professional footballer Marcelo, who has previously played for Real Madrid, lose his contract with Fluminense a month earlier than the supposed end of his contract. This came after the player had an altercation with the club’s coach, Mano Menezes, during a match with Gremio recently.

The incident happened during a league match in Brazil in which Fluminense was to play against Gremio. Recalled by Fluminense in 2022, Marcelo was to be a substitute in the match. But as the match commenced, there were reported cases of friction between him and the coaching staff, especially Mano Menezes.

Accounts have it that Marcelo questioned the coach’s decision and consequently altered the flow of the game plan drastically. Menezes, at the end, opted for striker John Kennedy in place of Marcelo, the defender who was willing to come in to the green field.

In a later press conference, Menezes justified his decision, saying,

“I was going to make the substitution at that time, but I heard something I did not like and decided not to. He was not going in to fix any problem for us; he was going in to let us preserve what we had (on the scoreboard)”.

The following statement shows that this decision was made based on the coach’s decision and the overall strategy of the game and not a personal decision.

After the altercation, Fluminense declared that Marcelo’s contract would be canceled prematurely according to the parties’ mutual consent.

This decision was made public just a day after the incident, thus revealing the club’s intent to part ways with the defender. In their official statement, Fluminense tried to comfort fans after saying that

“the relationship, both institutional and emotional, between Fluminense and Marcelo remain unaffected.”.

By using this phrasing, it can be inferred that while their working relationship was hostile and contentious, there is still some residual respect and warmth toward Marcelo for what he contributed to the team.

The departure of Marcelo from Fluminense is the beginning of a new phase for the player, who had a long journey in Europe before coming back to his home base team. While playing for Fluminense, he managed to earn the Rio de Janeiro state championship and Copa Libertadores to the team’s trophy case, bringing a lot more glories to his already illustrious career.
